The number of German companies that have filed for insolvency reached its highest level since 2014 in 2025, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office. Last year, 24,064 insolvency applications were recorded, an increase of 10.3% compared to 2024.

The most affected sectors include transport, the hospitality industry, and construction. Volker Treier, chief analyst of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Germany, emphasized that, on average, a company files for bankruptcy every 20 minutes.

Although the German economy grew slightly by 0.2% in 2025, the number of insolvencies remains concerning, and forecasts suggest a continuation of this trend in 2026, especially in the automotive and medical industries. Compared to previous crises, the number of insolvencies remains below the record level of 2009, when 32,687 bankruptcies were recorded.
