Sabin Cornoiu, the president of Salvamont Romania, stated that the austerity measures imposed by the Government have a severe impact on mountain rescue activities, considering that the system is undersized, with only 18.5% of the necessary operational capacity. These measures prevent rescuers from professionally preparing for the winter season, from purchasing protective and intervention equipment, as well as from carrying out the necessary certifications for rescuers.
Cornoiu emphasized that, without funds for training, rescuers risk not receiving the certificate of free practice, which could severely affect interventions in case of emergencies. Currently, Romania has only 350 mountain rescuers, while over 1,500 would be needed, leading to the exhaustion of the existing staff. Cornoiu intends to make a memorandum to the Government to request exemptions from these budgetary restrictions.
