NASA is launching the new space telescope, named after the first woman in a leadership position at the agency

NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman telescope, intended for the exploration of distant planets, exploding stars, and black holes, on July 16, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This telescope, named after the first woman in a leadership position at NASA, will reach a distance of 1.6 million kilometers from Earth in about a month.

With a budget of over 4 billion dollars, Roman will allow astronomers to observe a wide range of cosmic phenomena, including thousands of supernovae and billions of galaxies. Unlike the Hubble telescope, Roman will conduct observations much faster, completing in just one month what Hubble would have accomplished in 100 years. It is estimated that Roman will generate over 500 terabytes of data annually, redefining the way researchers discover rare objects in the universe. Nancy Grace Roman was a pioneer in NASA astronomy, and this telescope honors her contributions.
