A recent report from the European Commission highlighted serious problems in the sanitary-veterinary control system in Brazil, where 80 tons of beef were found contaminated with growth hormones. This practice, common in certain regions of the world, has been strictly prohibited in the European Union for 37 years due to risks to consumer health, including endocrine effects and possible links to cancer.
Approximately 30% of the EU's beef imports come from Brazil, also affecting Romania. Additionally, a recent incident involved sunflower seeds from Argentina, which were rejected due to excessive pesticides. In the context of these controversies, the Council of the European Union adopted a regulation allowing for the temporary suspension of preferential tariffs from the EU-Mercosur agreement, in cases where imports affect European producers. The European Commission will launch an investigation to assess the need for protective measures in light of the increasing imports.
