The President of the USA, Donald Trump, declared on Friday that he will suspend tariffs on 300,000 tons of imported beef for the next 90 days, in order to reduce the prices of this product before the midterm elections in November.
In the United States, beef has become a major issue for consumers, with prices rising by 15% in the last 12 months, according to official data. This price increase is caused by supply constraints, considering that the cattle population in the USA is at its lowest level since the 1950s, influenced by difficult economic and climatic conditions. Trump stated that imports will be sold at 25% cheaper than current prices, but did not specify the source of the meat.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the resumption of cattle imports from Mexico, after a one-year suspension. In the context of inflation, Washington has canceled some tariffs on agricultural products from Brazil, including beef.
