Donald Trump promises to eliminate tariffs on Irish whiskey: “On behalf of the United States of America, I will eliminate them”

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that he would eliminate tariffs on Irish whiskey at the end of a meeting held in Doonbeg, in western Ireland. The statement was made in the context of discussions with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and golfer Shane Lowry, the recent winner of the Irish Open.

Trump said that he had discussed the issue with the Taoiseach and that, after Lowry also raised the matter, he decided to support the elimination of the tariffs “on behalf of the United States of America.” It is not clear, however, when the announced exemption would take effect or whether it will be formalized through an administrative decision or an additional trade agreement.

The announcement comes after the trade agreement concluded in the summer of 2025 between the United States and the European Union, of which Ireland is a member. The document set a 15% ceiling for European products imported into the American market. Irish whiskey is among the products covered by the tariff regime.
