The U.S. will ban imports of dairy products and alcoholic beverages from Canada

The United States will ban, starting September 29, the import of certain dairy products and most alcoholic beverages from Canada, in a new escalation of the trade conflict between Washington and Ottawa, according to the Axios portal, cited by EFE. The measures will take effect in approximately three weeks and target specific product categories.

The decision by President Donald Trump’s administration comes after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. products, worth 27.6 billion Canadian dollars, came into force. The tariffs, ranging from 15% to 50%, affect steel, furniture, electronics and other consumer goods. Ottawa is thus responding to the 50% tariffs announced by Washington in August on certain Canadian products.

The measures were adopted after the failure of bilateral negotiations in August. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the United States of trying to impose a relationship based on economic dependence, but said that an agreement advantageous to both sides remains possible.

At the same time, Donald Trump announced that Canadian products could be excluded from U.S. federal procurement programs, estimated at more than 50 billion dollars annually. The development increases uncertainty over the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which is essential to the North American economy.
