The antitrust division of the United States Department of Justice reportedly received an order at the beginning of this week to suspend cooperation with Canadian authorities, according to The Wall Street Journal. The directive was reportedly sent in an email by Lynda Marshall, head of the international section, who allegedly asked employees to halt both cooperation on investigations and discussions concerning antitrust policies.

On Friday, section chiefs were reportedly asked to submit lists of areas of cooperation with Canada. The WSJ did not mention the reason for the decision, while the Department of Justice rejected the report, calling it “false.” The department said it had only requested the postponement of a meeting related to an investigation so that the U.S. team would have more time to prepare.

The disclosure comes amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Ottawa. Since Donald Trump returned to the White House in 2025, the United States has imposed tariffs on some Canadian products, while Canada has responded with similar measures. The two countries remain traditional allies, but trade disputes and Trump’s statements about integrating Canada into the United States have heightened tensions.
