Elena Costache, the president of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), stated that the judicial system is facing an unprecedented "political siege," accusing political leaders of fueling a campaign of hatred and disinformation against magistrates. She emphasized that justice has become a target of attacks, especially in the context of tensions related to the new draft law on magistrates' pensions, which the CSM reportedly gave a negative opinion on.
Costache stated that the reactions of the magistrates were justified by the attacks received and that their purpose was to defend the independence of justice, not to obtain privileges. The draft law provides for a pension cap of 70% of the last net allowance, and the CSM had a deadline of 30 days to provide an advisory opinion. Recent discussions on magistrates' pensions took place at the Cotroceni Palace but ended without a favorable outcome.
