CSM contests the salary positioning of the president of the ICCJ below ministers and presidential advisors

The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) expressed severe criticism of the draft of the future Salary Law, highlighting that the president of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) is paid less than presidential advisors and ministers.

In a statement from August 19, 2026, CSM emphasized that this hierarchy affects the constitutional status of the judiciary authority, putting its position in discussion against the other powers of the state. The draft provides a salary coefficient of 6.15 for the president of the ICCJ, lower than that of presidential advisors and leaders of parliamentary groups, who benefit from a coefficient of 6.50.

CSM pointed out that such a hierarchy is "difficult to justify," considering that the president of the ICCJ represents the pinnacle of the judicial system.

Additionally, CSM noted that the draft continues to be promoted despite the suspension of the drafting procedure by the ruling of the Bucharest Court of Appeal.
