Previously, police officers in Botoșani had also conducted searches in the locality of Cristinești and in the municipality of Botoșani, in a case in which a 38-year-old man (“Father Efrem”) was being investigated for fraud and the unauthorized performance of religious activities specific to the Orthodox faith, after he allegedly arranged a space at his home resembling a place of worship and allegedly used priestly vestments and objects.
Botoșani police conducted three searches on Monday in a criminal case concerning possible acts of embezzlement, abuse of office, intellectual forgery and aggravated theft. The searches took place at the headquarters of an educational institution, a public institution and the home of a private individual in the county.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Botoșani Economic Crime Investigation Service, under the supervision of a prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Săveni District Court.
According to investigators, between 2024 and 2025, officials of an administrative-territorial unit allegedly appropriated the institution’s fuel without recording its consumption in the accounting records. They also allegedly made illegal connections to the water and electricity networks, with the costs purportedly covered by an institution.
The investigation also concerns the execution of unauthorized works on a bridge, whose value was allegedly overestimated. Investigations are continuing to establish the full facts and take the appropriate legal measures. Until the investigation is completed, the persons concerned benefit from the presumption of innocence.
