The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the U.S. agency responsible for transportation security, signed a cooperation memorandum in Bucharest on Monday, November 2, aimed at strengthening civil aviation security in Romania and the United States.
The agreement enables the exchange of information relevant to protecting civil aviation and intensifying cooperation between the institutions of the two countries. The document was signed by SRI interim director General Răzvan Ionescu and the U.S. ambassador to Bucharest, Darryl Nirenberg.
Răzvan Ionescu emphasized that SRI’s relationship with U.S. agencies is important for information sharing and for conducting joint operational, analytical, and training activities. He noted that this cooperation requires maintaining a high level of professionalism.
Ambassador Darryl Nirenberg said that the memorandum strengthens Romanian-American cooperation in aviation security, the exchange of experience and best practices, as well as the shared commitment to protecting travelers.
The TSA operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and is responsible for protecting the national transportation system. The memorandum is part of the existing cooperation between Romanian and U.S. institutions. In September 2026, representatives of the Department of Homeland Security discussed information sharing, border security, and combating cross-border threats with Romanian authorities.
