Romania and the USA are expanding cooperation on border security. Cătălin Predoiu: “Security and prosperity mutually reinforce each other”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu met on Monday, September 21, with a delegation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, led by John Gountanis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Strategy, Policy and Planning. The discussions in Bucharest focused on expanding Romanian-American cooperation in the field of security and a joint response to transnational threats.

Priorities included combating drug trafficking, human trafficking and migrant smuggling, illegal migration, organized crime, and threats to border security. The Romanian side advocated accelerating information sharing, transferring expertise, and developing joint projects to prevent emerging types of risk.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said that the authorities are examining modern cooperation and experience-sharing mechanisms so that borders can be better protected and criminal networks dismantled more quickly. Cooperation with the United States already includes joint efforts addressing cybercrime and other transnational threats.

Predoiu said the partnership must deliver concrete results for citizens and contribute to a secure environment for investment. The two sides agreed to continue the dialogue and identify new cooperation tools.
