Cătălin Predoiu, interim minister of internal affairs, analyzed, in an article published on his personal website on Friday, the speech delivered in Athens by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Romanian official highlighted Washington’s message regarding the need for a more capable, responsible and engaged Europe in its own defense.
Predoiu says the United States is already observing changes in Europe, such as increased military spending, the development of the defense industry, the expansion of cooperation programs and the strengthening of production capabilities. Rubio presented Greece as a relevant ally in areas such as defense, energy and migration.
In his analysis, Predoiu states that the boundary between the economy and security is becoming increasingly less distinct. Reindustrialization, advanced technologies, drones, armaments, minerals, energy, cybersecurity and supply chains contribute, in his view, to defining national power.
According to the former minister, Romania has important advantages through its membership in NATO and the European Union, its position on the eastern flank, its proximity to Ukraine, its energy potential and its role in regional connectivity corridors. These assets could increase the country’s relevance if supported by concrete projects and contributions.
Predoiu believes that a relevant ally must be capable, predictable and credible. He says Romania should bring not only solutions designed by others, but also its own ideas and formulas for cooperation. At the same time, political parties have a responsibility to project national interests in a more competitive international context.
The analysis comes after U.S. calls for European countries to assume greater responsibilities within NATO and contribute more financially to the Alliance’s security. The same direction was supported at the B9 Summit in Bucharest, where Mark Rutte spoke about European allies assuming increased responsibilities.
