Martha Stewart, the American “pope” of lifestyle, publicly apologized on Sunday evening after being criticized for the Halloween costume in which she disguised herself as a homeless person. The American celebrity posted a photo on Instagram in which she was wearing ripped jeans and a tattered vest, with her face covered in dirt. In her hand, she held a sign that read: “I am hungry, please help me!”
The image was later deleted after generating numerous negative reactions. Internet users accused Martha Stewart of being out of touch with reality and of treating superficially the situation of people affected by poverty and homelessness.
“It is difficult to acknowledge when you have, indeed, made a major mistake,” wrote the 85-year-old billionaire. In a statement, she admitted that the choice of costume was “tactless and not funny at all” and apologized to those facing economic hardship.
Stewart initially said that she wanted to draw attention to the issue of homelessness, but later acknowledged that this explanation was not sufficient. Known for her work in gastronomy, interior design, gardening, and event organization, Martha Stewart has built an extensive media and business empire.
