Mihai Șubă, a great master and three-time champion of Romania, died at the age of 78, according to the announcement from the Romanian Chess Federation. Considered one of the most valuable Romanian chess players, Șubă was recognized for his original style and the innovations he brought to the game. He achieved 3rd place at the Interzonal in Las Palmas in 1982 and remained undefeated in confrontations with great players Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov. In 2008, he became the world champion for veterans, thus demonstrating his talent and dedication. Friends and colleagues described him as a refined intellectual, with a warm and humorous spirit.
