The Romanian government has decided to temporarily maintain the electricity production capacities based on lignite at the Turceni and Craiova power plants, which were supposed to close on August 31, 2026, according to commitments from the PNRR. This decision was made in the context of the recent closure of unit 2 of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. Romania has requested the European Commission to postpone the closure of group 5 at Turceni.
Thus, according to the government's decision, the power plants at Craiova 1 and 2 will remain operational until the end of the second quarter of 2027, and Turceni 5 until the end of the first quarter of 2028.
