Before Tuesday’s shutdown, unit 5 at the Turceni Power Plant had been shut down on Thursday morning, at 1:00 a.m., due to sealing problems with the water-air boiler, and the management of the Oltenia Energy Complex decided to stop it for repairs. Restarting was estimated for Monday, around 15:00, after the completion of the work.
On Monday, production at Turceni 5 resumed in the afternoon (starting at 15:00), and the Ministry of Energy justified keeping the unit operational, including in relation to the PNRR commitments, citing the need for energy system stability and the fact that coal stocks are available for peak periods. At the same time, Romania notified the European Commission that it had entered a „crisis situation” and requested an assessment of the available capacities and the postponement of the closure of Turceni’s lignite-fired unit 5.
