Temelín Unit 2 in the Czech Republic shut down after a malfunction in the control system

Unit 2 of the Temelín nuclear power plant in southern Czechia was disconnected on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, after a malfunction was detected in the control system for the non-nuclear area. The plant operator, CEZ, announced that the incident did not affect Unit 1, which continued to operate at full capacity.

Technicians inspected the installation and replaced the faulty electronic board in a control panel. Additional checks are under way, and Unit 2 is expected to restart on Thursday, September 17.

The unit had been restarted in April after an almost two-month annual overhaul, during which fuel elements were also replaced. The reactor was scheduled to operate for 16 months until the next planned shutdown.

The Temelín plant has two Soviet-designed WWER 1000/320 reactors equipped with American control systems. Czechia intends to increase the share of nuclear power from approximately one-third to more than half of its energy mix by 2040.
