Siegfried Mureșan delivers a firm message after being nominated prime minister: “We will keep the light on”

Siegfried Mureșan, designated on Thursday, September 17, by President Nicușor Dan for the position of prime minister, announced on Sunday, September 20, that he would continue the reforms begun by the government led by Ilie Bolojan. In a message posted on Facebook, the liberal MEP promised to maintain the direction of reforming the state and eliminating the practices that have accumulated in public administration over recent decades.

“Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan turned on the light in the pantry of schemes. If anyone expects me to turn off the light, they are sorely mistaken,” Mureșan said. He argued that the objective of the future government is to cleanse state institutions of the “disorder” accumulated over more than 30 years, for the benefit of people who work and respect the law.

The official decree regarding the designation is due to be published on Monday, September 21. Mureșan has ten days to request Parliament’s vote, meaning that ministerial hearings and the plenary vote could take place at the beginning of October.

However, the formation of the cabinet remains uncertain. The PNL, USR, UDMR, and representatives of the national minorities have a total of 187 parliamentarians, 46 fewer than the required majority of 233. Mureșan stated that he is counting on 169 votes and would try to obtain the PSD’s support, but the Social Democrats rejected the scenario.
