The Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, stated that Romania risks penalties of at least one billion euros if it does not close the coal-fired power plants in Oltenia by January 1, 2026. Although he initially mentioned a sum of two billion euros, he emphasized that a decision to maintain them would nullify the measures to restrict budgetary spending. Romania has received 2.6 billion euros to replace the coal-fired power plants, and officials are negotiating with the European Commission to avoid penalties and ensure the stability of the energy system.
