The European Commission issues a warning to Romania after the amendment of the decarbonization law.

The European Commission has issued a warning to Romania following the amendment of the Decarbonization Law, which was adopted by Parliament on August 5, 2026. The amendment proposed by the PSD stipulates that the closure of lignite and coal-fired power plants can only occur after the construction of new energy facilities.

The Commission emphasizes that these changes risk reversing progress in implementing reforms, impacting the assessment of milestone 114 from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Additionally, the Commission mentioned delays in the development of clean energy alternatives and highlighted the importance of phasing out coal-fired power plants to accelerate the transition to renewable sources.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and President Nicușor Dan criticized the amendments, warning that they could block the PNRR and lead to significant financial losses for Romania. Nicușor Dan announced that he would contest the law if it is promulgated in its current form.
