Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently criticized the European Union's decision to freeze Russia's assets, stating that it reflects an illusion of the rule of law in Brussels.

At an anti-war rally in Mohacs, Orban emphasized that the qualified majority vote for extending the freezing of Russian assets, necessary for financing a loan intended for Ukraine, shows a violation of the fundamental principles of the EU. He accused Brussels of 'theft' and stated that the founding treaty of the EU is being ignored. The European Commission invoked emergency powers to use the frozen funds in support of Ukraine, which could enhance the EU's influence in peace negotiations. The decision to allow sanctions by majority vote, instead of unanimity, limits Hungary's ability to block measures, which Orban considers a loss of sovereignty.
