American President Donald Trump has become a "toxic" factor for the European far-right, especially after Viktor Orbán's defeat in Hungary and against the backdrop of recent controversies related to Iran and his statements about Pope Leo, writes Politico.
"We need to keep our distance," Marine Le Pen told her colleagues from the far-right National Rally party at a meeting on Tuesday, according to a senior official present.
Key leaders of the European radical right (especially from France and Germany) have begun to distance themselves from Trump, believing that open association with him harms them electorally.
Orbán's surprising defeat, who presented himself as Trump's main European ally, is interpreted within radical movements as a warning: a too close connection with Trumpist Washington can cost votes.
"Close ties with Washington can be a burden and can be misinterpreted," said one of Le Pen's close allies. "We like our friends in Washington, but we don't want them to tell us what to do."
