The UN Security Council approved a US plan for Gaza on Monday, which authorizes the formation of an international stabilization force to ensure security in the devastated territory and to outline a possible future Palestinian state. Russia and China abstained in the 13-0 vote, and the vote is considered a crucial step in maintaining the fragile ceasefire after two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
The plan stipulates that Hamas must release all hostages in exchange for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, but the delivery of some hostages has encountered difficulties. There have also been sporadic violence, including Israeli airstrikes.
The resolution supports President Trump's ceasefire plan, which includes the creation of a Peace Authority and gives the international force an extensive mandate, including the demilitarization of the territory. Hamas criticized the plan, stating that the international force should not intervene in Gaza but only monitor the borders.
Following negotiations, the US revised the language regarding Palestinian self-determination, which sparked discontent from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. The resolution also provides for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza based on standards related to demilitarization, in collaboration with the stabilization force and others.
