The Trump administration has announced that technological advances allow for supersonic flight without the associated explosive noise, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Since 1973, the FAA has prohibited civil aircraft from exceeding Mach 1 over U.S. territory to prevent deafening noise.
Now, the Department of Transportation intends to replace this ban with a noise limit, thus allowing supersonic flights as long as the noise remains below a certain level. This change follows an executive order from 2025, which directs the FAA to repeal the ban and establish noise-based certification standards.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized that new technologies will reduce the noise impact on communities. Final rules are expected by 2027. In the past, supersonic flights caused property damage and complaints from the public due to sonic booms. American companies are now developing quieter and more efficient supersonic aircraft.
