The Spanish authorities evacuated the remains of three kings who ruled the region of Aragon between 1035 and 1104, from the Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, threatened by a vegetation fire.
The decision was made after the fire, which began to wreak havoc on Monday, headed towards the monastery. The remains were transported to the Provincial Museum in Huesca for protection. The Vice President of the Huesca region, Mar Vaquero, emphasized the courage of the rescue team that managed to evacuate historical artifacts from the 10th century, including ceremonial garments.
The fire burned over 9,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of 16 localities, while another fire in the province of Huelva burned 31,000 hectares, evacuating approximately 700 people. The monastery remained unscathed on Friday morning.
