Approximately 45,000 residents in northeastern Spain have been advised to stay indoors due to a vegetation fire. The fire has destroyed 1,300 hectares of vegetation near the town of Bisbal d'Emporda.

A vegetation fire in the northeast of Spain has prompted authorities to recommend that approximately 45,000 residents in the eastern towns of the Girona province stay indoors, keeping windows and doors closed due to the dense smoke. The fire, which broke out near the town of Bisbal d’Emporda, has destroyed around 1,300 hectares of scrub and forest, equivalent to 1,800 football fields, already affecting 2,200 hectares of vegetation.

The flames, fueled by strong winds, are out of control, spreading in the mountainous region of Massis de les Gavarres. The regional government of Catalonia has requested assistance from the Military Emergency Unit, UME. Additionally, a man suspected of starting the fire has been arrested; he was using an angle grinder, a tool prohibited during the drought period in the region, which can generate dangerous sparks. So far, no human casualties have been reported.
