Sanae Takaichi, the new Prime Minister of Japan, stated that she wishes to improve relations between Tokyo and Washington, emphasizing the importance of the Japan-U.S. alliance in foreign and security policy. In her inaugural speech, Takaichi acknowledged the challenges related to immigration, in the context of the labor shortage, but also highlighted the concerns of the Japanese population.
She also advocated for a sincere dialogue with China, mentioning its military activities and those of other countries as a serious concern. Takaichi announced the intention to increase military spending to 2% of GDP, two years earlier than planned, and promised economic measures to combat inflation. Although she enjoys high popularity, Takaichi will need to collaborate with other parties to promote her agenda, considering that she does not have an absolute majority in Parliament.
