The Ministry of Finance is maintaining the 25% reduction in the excise duty on standard diesel sold in Romania from September 16–30, 2026, against the backdrop of rising international quotations and pump prices.
The reduction is equivalent to 701.07 lei per 1,000 liters, or 829.69 lei per ton. Thus, the effective excise duty will be 2,103.22 lei per 1,000 liters, or 2,489.05 lei per ton.
The decision is based on an analysis of market indicators. For the second half of September, Platts quotations for diesel increased by 51.19%, while the average pump price of standard diesel rose by 27.47%. In the first half of the month, the changes were 45.65% and 25.45%, respectively.
According to Law No. 162/2026, the excise duty reduction may not exceed 25%, regardless of the extent of the increase in international quotations. Therefore, although the indicators point to additional pressure on the market, the reduction remains at the maximum level permitted by law.
The mechanism is reassessed every two weeks and aims to limit the pass-through of fuel price increases to transport, logistics, and consumer goods prices. The Ministry of Finance will continue to monitor market developments. Without the reduction, the price of diesel would have been approximately 85 bani per liter higher.
