The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group in conflict with the Sudanese army for over two years, announced on Thursday that they have accepted a humanitarian ceasefire proposed by a group of mediators led by the U.S., known as the Quad. This comes after the RSF took control of the city of el-Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region. The RSF stated that they are waiting to implement the agreement and to begin discussions for a cessation of hostilities, while a Sudanese military official claimed that the army will accept a ceasefire only if the RSF completely withdraws from civilian areas.
In recent days, humanitarian conditions have deteriorated, with over 36,000 people displaced due to the violence. Humanitarian organizations warn that resources are insufficient, and 83% of families in eastern and western Sudan do not have enough food. The conflict has led to the deaths of at least 40,000 people and the displacement of 12 million, and international aid is vital to cope with the crisis. Many people who fled from el-Fasher have reached refugee camps, where conditions are extremely difficult, and stories of suffering are becoming increasingly common.
