Turkish company MAPA Insaat, the builder of Section 2 Boița-Cornetu of the Sibiu-Pitești Motorway, was fined 40,000 lei by the Olt River Basin Administration after inspectors confirmed that the Olt River had been polluted with wastewater from the construction site in the Câineni area, Vâlcea County.

The inspection was carried out at the beginning of September following a complaint and targeted the site outside the built-up area of Greblești. The area includes offices, sanitary facilities and a concrete batching plant used for the motorway works.

Romanian Waters inspectors found that water filtration was ineffective. The settling tank at the concrete batching plant had not been cleaned and was full of sludge, indicating that the facility could no longer retain suspended matter at its designed capacity.

At the discharge point into the Olt River, deposits specific to process wastewater resulting from the washing of concrete mixer trucks and the mixer were identified. These irregularities formed the basis for the sanction imposed on the company.
