Baia Mare City Hall was fined 4,500 lei after building and beginning to mark several bike lanes in the city center without the final approval from the Traffic Police. The sanction was imposed because the works began before the mandatory document was issued.
The bike lanes were recently built and will not be demolished. Local authorities say they had previously requested and obtained approval in principle for their construction, but the documentation required to obtain the final approval was submitted after the statutory deadline had expired.
Police intervened after noticing that the lane-marking works had begun without final approval. City Hall must pay the full fine of 4,500 lei, while the documents submitted later are still under review by the Traffic Police.
Local administration representatives have launched internal checks to determine why the documents were submitted late and whether anyone can be subject to disciplinary sanctions. City Hall says it is pursuing completion of the approval procedure for the bike lanes already built.
