Several banners inviting Iași residents to cycle in Bacău have been installed at the entrances to the municipality of Iași, after Iași City Hall removed the bike lanes in July.

“There are no more bike lanes in Iași—come to Bacău, we have 44 km,” reads the message on one of the banners placed at the entrance from Vaslui. According to Bacău Mayor Lucian Viziteu, a total of five such panels have been installed.

The mayor said the initiative is not a political attack, but a campaign promoting the municipality of Bacău. He added that the message could also encourage the Iași administration to build new bike lanes.

The bike lanes in Iași were removed after the police no longer allowed the use of those built on sidewalks, as they no longer complied with the applicable regulations. Representatives of Iași City Hall acknowledged that the municipality had been forced to eliminate them.

USR Senator Marius Bodea criticized the administration led by Mihai Chirica, arguing that Iași had become the target of ridicule and that the problems affecting the bike-lane network had not been resolved. Iași City Hall has not yet reacted to the appearance of the banners.
