The Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, asks Bucharest residents to endure the inconvenience caused by the numerous construction sites opened simultaneously to modernize the tram lines and maintains that the decision was necessary for the city's future. In a Facebook post, the mayor said that he understands the hours lost in traffic every day and thanked residents for their patience.

Ciucu says that the works were not started for electoral reasons, but because of the advanced state of deterioration of the infrastructure, the deadlines imposed by the financiers, and the risk of certain permits expiring. According to the mayor, some lines are more than 50 years old, while broken or deformed rails affected passenger safety and caused malfunctions in the new trams.

The financial stake of the projects is approximately five billion lei: one billion lei from European funds and more than four billion lei from loans granted by international development banks. Ciucu warns that failure to comply with the execution and acceptance schedule could lead to the loss of funding, while the expiration of the permits could postpone the projects by three or four years.

The mayor promised to return with explanations about the sections where the works appear to be stalled, the lack of workers, and compliance with the completion deadlines. Meanwhile, restrictions are affecting heavily trafficked areas, including Dimitrie Pompeiu Boulevard.

Context: Before the current tram line, Ciucu discussed with contractors limiting the impact of construction sites and announced targeted mobilizations in the transport network

Earlier, General Mayor Ciprian Ciucu summoned contractors, utility operators, and the Capital Police to City Hall to discuss measures to reduce congestion with the start of the school year. He said that 63 construction sites were open in Bucharest, 35 of which directly affected traffic on 30 major roads, while the works also affected 45 intersections/road junctions; at the same time, 230 educational institutions were located less than 500 meters from such areas. The authorities also decided to direct traffic, intensify the works, maintain the passage corridor, and inspect the fencing around construction sites, while some interventions on tram lines were to be carried out in sections, with reopening after each portion was completed.

At the same time, Ciucu had announced the start of installing a tram rail under Constanța Bridge, as part of a larger 6.7-kilometer project (Lot 4). According to the announcement, the prioritized works were supposed to allow traffic to resume on two lanes in each direction by the beginning of the school year, while the installation activities also included excavation works and the replacement of underground networks, with work proceeding at an accelerated pace.
