Russia’s Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) conducted a clandestine exercise near the Svalbard archipelago in which it simulated deploying technology capable of destroying undersea cables, Reuters reports. The operation did not damage existing infrastructure, but Western authorities interpreted it as possible preparation for an open conflict with NATO.

The exercise took place near the two fiber-optic cables connecting Svalbard to mainland Norway. The infrastructure, located at depths of up to 2,700 meters, carries significant volumes of data from the SvalSat satellite station, part of NASA’s network.

Britain and Norway announced in April that they had identified a clandestine Russian operation in Arctic waters and informed Moscow that they knew about the existence of the new technology. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik warned that any attack on critical infrastructure would have consequences.

The incident draws renewed attention to the vulnerability of undersea communications and energy cables, particularly after the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022 and incidents in the Baltic Sea. Operations such as Baltic Sentry and Nordic Warden have reduced the risks, but analysts warn that Moscow could test the limits of NATO’s Article 5.
