Vice President JD Vance stated that the marathon negotiations with Iran, held in Islamabad, did not lead to an agreement on ending the war, although the discussions were substantial and lasted 21 hours.
Vance mentioned that, despite considerable efforts to reach a consensus, Iran refused to accept the conditions proposed by the United States, which were described as "flexible."
“We discussed for 21 hours and had a series of substantial discussions with the Iranians. This is the good news [...] The bad news is that we did not reach an agreement. And I believe this is bad news for Iran much more than it is bad news for the United States of America. Therefore, we return to the United States without having reached an agreement.” said JD Vance at a press conference in Islamabad.
The main sticking point was Iran's refusal to abandon its nuclear program. Vance emphasized the need for a firm commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons in the long term:
“The question is: Do we see a fundamental commitment from the Iranians not to develop nuclear weapons not just now, not just in two years, but in the long term? We still have not seen this, but we hope to see it.”
He also mentioned that he had constant communication with President Donald Trump and other American officials throughout the negotiations: “Obviously, I kept in constant touch with the president. I don’t know how many times I spoke with him, maybe six times, maybe twelve times in the last 21 hours.”
“We were quite conciliatory. The president told us: ‘You need to come here in good faith and make every effort to reach an agreement.’ We did that and, unfortunately, we did not manage to make any progress.” added the American vice president.
Vance concluded that, although no significant progress was made, he hopes that Iran will reconsider its position in the future.
