JD Vance, the Vice President of the USA, expressed criticism regarding the digital regulations of the European Union, stating that the EU should not penalize American companies for internal issues.

His comments come in the context of rumors that the European Commission could fine X (formerly Twitter) hundreds of millions of dollars for failing to meet transparency obligations. Vance emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, and Elon Musk, the owner of X, appreciated the support from the American official.

The European Commission opened a formal investigation against X in December 2023, but has not yet completed the investigation. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the slow pace of investigations into American tech giants, and Washington has urged the EU to abandon its digital regulations.

Despite the tensions, European officials, such as Henna Virkkunen, stated that they are ready to enforce existing laws without fearing reactions from the USA.
