Vice President J.D. Vance sparked reactions after he referred to Canada as "a state" during a rally in Maine, describing the comment as a "Freudian slip." This occurred in the context of the rekindling of the trade war between the U.S. and Canada, after President Donald Trump announced the doubling of tariffs on vehicles and auto parts imported from Canada to 50%.

Vance stated that, without the protection of the United States, Canada would be "invaded by a foreign country" and criticized the high tariffs imposed by Canada on products from Maine. His statements came following the implementation of 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products, announced through a presidential decree on July 20.
