Italians are being called to the polls on Sunday and Monday for five referendums, including on shortening the deadline for obtaining citizenship and changing labor laws. There are fears turnout will fall short of the 50% threshold needed to validate the vote. The Giorgia Meloni-led government is discouraging turnout and the prime minister has announced she will go to the polls but not vote to block the quorum from being reached

The referendum in Italy targets two major proposals: reducing the period needed to obtain citizenship from 10 to 5 years for non-EU residents and repealing laws liberalizing the labor market. The government led by Giorgia Meloni opposes these measures and has called for abstentions to invalidate the vote. Supporters of the reform estimate that 2.5 million people could benefit from the change in citizenship law. The CGIL union also proposes restoring protections for workers in a business-friendly culture.
