Italy will present on Tuesday, during an emergency meeting of the interior ministers of the European Union, a proposal to establish centers for migrants outside the community bloc, inspired by the model developed in Albania.
This initiative comes against the backdrop of the migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where the government led by Giorgia Meloni suspended the application of Schengen rules for a month, generating criticism from the Spanish government and the Italian opposition.
The majority of migrants who arrived in Ceuta have already left the area. The Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, will propose centers for illegal migrants, funded by European funds, mainly located in African countries such as Rwanda, Ghana, and Tunisia, but also in other countries such as Uzbekistan and Montenegro.
Italy will also request the strict application of the GSP+ program, which facilitates cooperation with developing countries in the process of repatriating their citizens illegally in the EU, with the aim of reducing illegal migration.
