The leaders of the governing coalition in Italy have called for the suspension of Spain from the Schengen Area, after thousands of migrants forcibly entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the images as "shocking" and stated that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a threat to the security of European borders, asserting that Italy is ready to take extraordinary measures, including the suspension of Schengen in relation to Spain.

The crisis has amplified tensions between Rome and Madrid. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized the Spanish government's plan to legalize the situation of undocumented migrants, arguing that it encourages human trafficking.

Madrid rejected the accusations, and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares summoned the Italian ambassador and accused Rome of a lack of European solidarity and "partisan demagoguery."
