The regime in Iran continues to execute individuals who challenge the authority in Tehran, and the case of Saleh Mohammadi, a 19-year-old wrestler, highlights the brutality of this system. Mohammadi was executed by hanging after being accused of killing a police officer, charges he vehemently denied. Detained by the authorities, the young man was subjected to torture and confessed under pressure that he caused one of the 29 injuries to the police officer, even though he was not captured by cameras at the time of the incident. His family and colleagues claim he was at his uncle's house at the time of the crime.
Without access to an independent lawyer, Mohammadi was convicted based on anonymous statements. His execution took place in a prison in Qom, despite international appeals to halt the death penalty. Mohammadi represented Iran in international competitions, bringing home a bronze medal from the Buvaisar Saitiev International Tournament.
