Shahram Sadeghi was executed in Iran, according to the announcement from the semi-official Tasnim agency and confirmation from the Iranian judiciary. He had been accused of driving a car towards police during the protests in Karaj on January 8, injuring seven members of the security forces, one of whom remained in a coma for three months.
Sadeghi was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in Karaj, which also ordered the confiscation of his assets, being accused by authorities of conducting an "operational action" in favor of Israel and the United States. The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court of Iran, and the execution took place in the early hours of Sunday. His case joins a series of death sentences for participants in the January protests, drawing the attention of human rights organizations to the severe repression against dissent in Iran. Iranian authorities justify these sentences with accusations of supporting hostile foreign interests.
