Iran has executed a foreign citizen, identified as Qaim Hosseini, also known by the pseudonym 'Arian', for his participation in the anti-government protests in Isfahan, which took place on January 8.
The authorities did not disclose his nationality, but stated that Hosseini was actively involved in the demonstrations, where four members of the security forces were killed. This is the fifth detainee executed in connection with these protests, after four others were previously sentenced. Hosseini's trial was contested by human rights organizations, which denounce forced confessions and the lack of a fair trial.
Since the beginning of the year, Iran has executed at least 901 people, and the UN has expressed concerns regarding the use of the death penalty in cases related to protests and procedural guarantees.
