PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu allegedly tried to persuade UDMR president Kelemen Hunor to support a future PSD government, during negotiations to form a parliamentary majority, threatening to support the AUR project regarding Flag Day. According to political sources cited by Digi24, the discussions took place this week, as the parties seek the votes needed to invest the new Executive.
Kelemen Hunor allegedly said that UDMR could vote for a PSD government only if AUR and SOS were not involved in the political formula. Without PNL’s support, however, such a majority could not be formed.
The cited sources claim that Grindeanu allegedly told the UDMR leader that PSD was willing to vote for legislative projects initiated by AUR if they reached the Parliament’s agenda. As an example, the controversial project regarding National Flag Day was reportedly mentioned; it was adopted through parliamentary procedures with votes from PSD and AUR. UDMR publicly opposed the initiative.
In fact, PNL parliamentarian Alexandru Muraru commented on his Facebook page that bringing the legislative project regarding Tricolor Day back onto the Parliament’s agenda would represent an agreement between PSD and AUR to put pressure on UDMR.
“Removing this project from the drawer and pushing it onto the Parliament’s agenda represents an agreement between PSD and AUR to harass UDMR officials and elected representatives of Hungarian ethnicity. The objective is also to put pressure on UDMR to vote for a government that is unfit for office and disastrous for Romania, indirectly supported by AUR and other extremist groups and parties,” Muraru wrote on his Facebook page.
PNL leader Ilie Bolojan would reportedly be willing to make his mandate more flexible, but is facing opposition within his own party. USR has announced that it will not vote for a cabinet that includes PSD. President Nicușor Dan allegedly told political leaders that he intends to designate a prime minister by the end of next week, before departing for the United States.
