UDMR President Kelemen Hunor announced on Tuesday that he had spoken for the first time with designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu and expressed confidence that he would succeed in forming a parliamentary majority to secure the Government’s investiture.
The UDMR leader said that Romania urgently needs a fully empowered Executive, amid the difficult economic situation. He argued that the future Government must support vulnerable people, protect jobs and create new ones.
Kelemen Hunor said Luca Niculescu’s diplomatic experience, gained through negotiations over the course of his career, is an argument in favor of forming a parliamentary majority capable of granting a vote of confidence.
However, the UDMR president also indicated the formation’s essential condition for supporting the new Executive: it must not depend on the votes of sovereignist parties and parliamentary groups. “We have a single red line: the new government cannot depend on the votes of AUR and SOS,” Kelemen Hunor said.
Luca Niculescu was designated prime minister by President Nicușor Dan, following Monday’s consultations at Cotroceni Palace. Negotiations will follow to shape the parliamentary majority and determine the Government’s composition.
