PSD President Sorin Grindeanu spoke with UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor before the consultations at Cotroceni Palace regarding the formation of a parliamentary majority and a new government, according to Digi24 sources. The discussion reportedly displeased the Social Democrats, who allegedly did not receive a firm commitment from UDMR to support a majority.
PSD does not have enough votes on its own to pass a government formula through Parliament and is trying to obtain the support of the parties alongside which it participated in the former governing coalition. The Social Democrats reportedly expected UDMR to clearly confirm that it was prepared to cooperate with them.
Kelemen Hunor’s position is considered relevant in the context of his previous statements, in which he supported rebuilding the coalition and urged the liberals to talk to PSD. UDMR would, however, prefer a majority that also includes the liberals, not only the parliamentarians who oppose Ilie Bolojan.
According to the cited sources, the option of an independent prime minister could be put forward at Cotroceni. PSD would accept this solution only if the government team included political ministers.
