India is exploring an unusual solution to control migration from Bangladesh: the introduction of venomous snakes and crocodiles along the river border. This idea was discussed within the Border Security Force (BSF) as an alternative to the construction of physical barriers, especially in areas where marshy land and flood risks make their installation impossible. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his nationalist party have invested in building a fence along a length of 4,096 kilometers, but 20% of the border remains unprotected. The internal memorandum of the BSF, which was sent to operational units, calls for an assessment of the use of reptiles as a security measure.

This proposal has raised concerns from human rights organizations, which warn that the government's anti-immigration rhetoric could affect minorities in the region. Additionally, the Indian government has adopted a hardline stance against illegal migration, particularly targeting citizens from Bangladesh and Rohingya Muslims, which has led to controversial arrests and deportations. This approach suggests an intensification of security measures at the border, in the context of political and social tensions in India.
