Human Rights Watch has published a report stating that Israel used white phosphorus in residential areas of southern Lebanon, thus violating international humanitarian law.
The organization confirmed the authenticity of seven photographs showing white phosphorus munitions fired at a residential area in Yohmor on March 3, causing fires in at least two houses. Ramzi Kaiss, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, emphasized the seriousness of this action, noting that the use of white phosphorus in populated areas can have devastating consequences for civilians, including severe burns and long-term suffering.
White phosphorus is an extremely flammable chemical substance, commonly used to create smoke screens or for illuminating the battlefield, but its use in populated areas is highly controversial due to the risks to the civilian population.
